Which residence routes apply to a move to Porto?
Portugal offers separate residence routes for work, independent activity, family and other purposes. The intended activity in Portugal determines the route. The visa application goes to the competent Portuguese consular post when the route requires a visa. Lei n.º 23/2007 Article 58 covers the residence visa, Article 77 the general residence authorisation and Article 98 family reunification.
A retiree or a person with income of their own may look at the D7 route. The applicant’s nationality, income and residence plans determine whether the D7 route fits, and the competent Portuguese consular post receives the visa application.
A person who plans to take a Portuguese job or carry out independent activity needs the residence basis that matches that work. The employee route generally requires a Portuguese-law work contract and Segurança Social registration. The independent-activity route uses independent-activity records and any professional declaration.
How does the residence procedure run?
The procedure has five steps.
- The applicant identifies the purpose of residence. Intended work, retirement income or family circumstances are set against the current visa routes.
- The applicant assembles the consular visa evidence for the competent Portuguese post when the route requires a visa.
- The applicant chooses the Porto AIMA channel. Loja AIMA Porto I is at Avenida de França, 316, Edifício Capitólio, Loja 57, and another Loja AIMA may send the request to the services for the applicant’s area of residence.
- The applicant submits the residence-authorisation request with the Article 77 residence file, which holds the evidence for the selected ground.
- Family and renewal requests come later. They depend on the permit dates and on the circumstances of each request.
How does family reunification work for a Porto resident?
Lei n.º 23/2007 Article 98 sets the conditions for family reunification. They include a minimum permit-holding period and requirements for covered relatives who cohabited with or depended on the resident. The current text of Article 98 states the holding period.
The relevant dates are the date each relative entered Portugal and the date the principal applicant received a permit. Each relative’s dates are set against the relevant family category before a request is made for that relative. Relationship, cohabitation or dependency records support the request.
How does an EU citizen register in Porto?
Porto directs an EU citizen who lives in the city to the Gabinete do Munícipe at Praça do General Humberto Delgado, 266, 4000-286 Porto. The visit is subject to prior appointment through Linha Porto.
Article 14 of Lei n.º 37/2006 is the basis of the municipal registration route. It requires registration within 30 days after the first three months of a stay that exceeds three months. Porto’s municipal guidance lists EUR 18 for an in-person certificate and EUR 15 for an online certificate for applicants over 25.
When should a residence renewal be requested?
Temporary residence permits run for a fixed period, and renewal is required before expiry. A renewal request depends on three things: the title’s expiry, the continued conditions and the available AIMA renewal process.
The current AIMA renewal window and the dates printed on the title determine when a request falls due. The filing date also depends on when updated activity evidence can be obtained, because the documents are assembled before the permit expires. The residence permit renewal guide sets out the renewal conditions in detail.
What affects timing and delays?
The route and the evidence set the timing. A case takes longer when a work record, family document, consular appointment or authority response remains outstanding.
The papers to gather are the passport, income or employment papers, accommodation records, family evidence and AIMA notices. AIMA published a fee-table update with effect from 1 March 2026.
